Diary of an Etsy Seller: Twitter Parties

Standard

Everything you always wanted to know about Twitter parties, but were too afraid to ask!

In order for twitter parties to work, you MUST retweet others. If you do not retweet you will likely be blocked from the parties and not allowed to attend future parties.

What does @ mean, and what about that # I see everywhere??? What is a Twitter party? How do I participate? How does it help me?

All very good questions, and hopefully I will answer them all in this document. If you still don’t understand something, or just have a question I didn’t cover… please post them below 😀

Before I get into the Twitter party, I’d like to explain the difference between the @ symbol and the # symbol.

The @ symbol is a way for you to tag, or “shout out” to a specific person, or account. Just like on Facebook, when you tag someone in a post… it sends the @user a notification that they have been mentioned in a tweet.

The # symbol (and this is the more important one) is a way to perform a search on Twitter. Think of it like the tags you use in your Etsy listings to be found by people searching for your item. When you use the #craftshout, you are not tagging someone specifically, but rather “tagging” your tweet, so that if anyone searches the team/group hashtag your tweet will show up. This is ESPECIALLY important for the twitter parties.

A Twitter party, is really just a set date and time (usually for an hour), in which random people get together on Twitter and re-tweet each other. That simple.

Ready to Join the Party?  You participate by tweeting your own items, directly from your Etsy store and adding the group/team hashtag to them. You tweet ONLY during that set date and time, and ONLY using that specific #.

Now to the re-tweets… in order for everyone to gain maximum exposure, we re-tweet each other. How does that work? During the set date and time, go to the search in Twitter and type in the team or group hashtag such as #CraftShout or #EpicOnEtsy . You will get a list of every tweet in the twitterverse that is using that hashtag. Once the feed starts coming in (and when we have lots of people, it will move FAST) just randomly start retweeting other people’s items. Remember, 2 re-tweets for every 1 of yours. If you would like to retweet more, feel free to do so, but keep in mind Twitter’s limits. You are allowed 100 tweets/retweets per hour for a grand total of 2400 tweets/retweets per day. If you exceed this number you will not be allowed to tweet or retweet for a few hours (also called “twitter jail”).

Be sure to choose ALL TWEETS when you are searching for team/group hashtag, that way you see everyone who used that tag, and not just the popular ones 😀

  • NOTE... it is MUCH easier to participate if you have an auto post program like around.io (so worth it) You can set your tweets ALL up ahead of time, and then just focus on re-tweeting.  Of course, this is optional as most sites like around.io charge for the service.

In addition, you can favorite tweets, or even reply to them. Just remember, anything you want to be visible to other party members it must have the correct team/group hashtag (check spelling! It matters) or it will NOT show up at the party, and you won’t get retweets.

How does this help me???  I cannot give you a 100% positive answer that it will equal sales. I CAN however tell you it will gain you views, likes and even more Twitter followers. Usually I take a screenshot of my shop views before a party, and then again after. The increase is usually in the 300 views range. That is HUGE for exposure. I do know other people have reported sales as a direct result of participating in these parties. Try it, and see for yourself, it is free and only uses an hour of your time 😀

Please Note: Your twitter account MUST be public- if it isn’t, no one can see your tweets and you will not get retweets. Also note, If your twitter account is new, or you have a very low number of followers, your tweets may not show up in the hashtag search- work on building your twitter following.

For #CraftShout and #EpicOnEtsy Parties: The rules are as follows- you have a max of 15 tweets per hour (If the party is longer, you get 15 tweets per hour- not per the entire party. So if the party lasts 2 hours, you get a total of 30 tweets). Retweet at least 2 other tweets per your 1 tweet. Space your tweets out about every 2-4 minutes. Choose different items for each tweet. If you tweet too fast, or keep tweeting the same item you’re likely to be flagged as a spammer and may not get retweets.

For 24 hour Twitter parties: Please keep in mind for the 24 hour twitter parties, the rules still apply. You still have a max of 15 tweets per hour (spaced out 2-4 minutes apart). Twitter has a max of 100 tweets/retweets PER HOUR limit, and a 2400 tweet/retweet max PER DAY limit. Please keep this in mind during these parties so you don’t get put in twitter jail.

Other VERY IMPORTANT Twitter Information: You always want to be working on building your following on twitter. Not only does this help everyone at the parties by bringing new eyes and new potential customers to our items, but it helps build your own following for your brand.

1. How’d you get started on Etsy?

I’ve always had an interest in running my own business. Even as a
young girl, I was always trying to make money and sell something. When
I was about 10 years old, I started making beaded necklaces and
selling them to other kids in the neighborhood. After thinking about
it for a while last year, I decided to go for it. My fiancé has been
very supportive and encouraging in my pursuit.

2. What was your inspiration for your shop?

Art Deco being one of my favorite styles of art, has definitely been
an inspiration since I began designing and selling on Etsy.

3. What’s your favorite shop item and why?

My favorite item is a pair of orange and brown flower earrings. The
bright orange flowers really pop against the brown beads. These
earrings remind me of Autumn (my favorite time of year).

4. How do you unwind when you’re not creating?

In the evenings and on weekends, I like to read, write, cook, and
spend time with my fiancé.

5. What’s your favorite kind of cupcake?

Without a doubt, my favorite cupcake is Red Velvet.

6. What was your worst job?

Possibly the current one I’m in. After I graduated college, I went to
graduate school for 2 years to become a high school teacher but with
the recession and scarce job market, it’s been tough landing a job. I
needed money so I took a job as a secretary.

7. What’s your favorite cartoon as a kid? As an adult, if you stumble
upon it while channel surfing now would you stop & watch?

I really enjoyed watching “Jem and the Holograms.” I liked Jem because
she was a talented and successful young woman. She also had these pink
star-shaped earrings that would allow her to change her image
instantly from Jerrica, a manager of a music company, to Jem, the lead
singer of a rock group. I would definitely watch now it if I saw it on
television.

8. What’s your fantasy job?

My dream job is to be able to run my Etsy shop full time and open up a
quaint jewelry boutique somewhere near home in New York City.

9. Do you have a secret guilty pleasure? Reality TV.

10. List 3 things you are so obsessed with it is torture to ever say no to.

-Jeopardy (TV Show)

-Chocolate

– Coffee

11. List 3 of your favorite Etsy shops.

-Love You A Latte Shop

-Thuja Shop

– Tommy Kane Shop

12. Do you have a favorite author? When you read, do you use a proper
bookmark, bend the page, or grab anything handy to mark your place? My
favorite contemporary author is Joyce Carol Oats and my favorite
classic author is Edgar Allan Poe. I rarely use a standard bookmark. I
read a lot on the subway and I often find myself using my Metrocard
which I have actually noticed other fellow New Yorkers do too!

13. If money was no object and you can live wherever you want, where
would that be? New York City (my current home), I can’t imagine living
anywhere else.

14. What is your best childhood memory?  On Sunday mornings, my father
and I used to walk to the bagel store to get breakfast for
everyone…it was our special time together.

15. How would you describe your work style?

My office day job keeps me very busy from early in the morning to the
late afternoon. I work in a hospital in Midtown Manhattan so things
are always happening. When I work on my Etsy shop in the evenings and
weekend, I work just as hard but with a more relaxed environment. I
like to listen to music, drink coffee and sit by the window while I
make jewelry and think of new ideas.

16. If you could choose any one superhero power, what would it be and
why? Time travel so I could experience the world in different eras.

17. Who are your heroes? Lori Greiner, an entrepreneur and inventor.
Donna Mahar, one of my professors from graduate school.

18. What would you do if you won the lottery?

I would open a jewelry boutique in New York City, travel Europe with
my fiancé and save the rest for a rainy day.

19. What was the last movie you watched? Was it good? I watched “Eyes
Wide Shut.” It was great to watch it again, a little older. I was a
teenager when the movie first came out in theaters.

20. If you knew what you know now, when you first opened your store,
what would you do differently? I think I would have spent more time on
my shop photos and perfecting that skill. Photographs are crucial to
selling successfully online.

Meet Lisa Haley from Frankfurt, DE.  Lisa makes wonderful aprons, oven mitts, and other household goods in her Etsy shop TheGoodOleDays.  Read more about Lisa here on Promo Junkies of Etsy:

How did you first get started on Etsy?

I saw a post on my fb wall and followed the link. I was looking for a way to work out of the home and thought this would be a great idea.

What is your inspiration for your shop?

I am an old fashioned, low key kind of gal, so my shop is more on the practical side. Useful, but well-made.

What is your favorite item from your own shop and why?

I’d have to go with my Ode To Coffee Pillow Cover.  I love coffee, I love buttons, and I really like the way the fabric sparkles.

coffeepillow

How do you unwind when you’re not creating?

I like to read. Just finished “START”, by Jon Acuff. Next on the list “Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook.”

List 3 of your favorite Etsy shops.

Katwise, Ms Tan Designs, jmorco

How would you describe your work style?

I have ADD work style. I try to be organized and methodical, but the truth is I have a gazillion ideas I’d like to try, and many items in various stages of completion. I’ll work on one thing for a while, then work on something else. I could never have just one item (like aprons, or pillow covers) in my shop.

If you could choose any one superhero power, what would it be and why?

Super-intelligence, because then I could figure out what I need to do to be successful and I could share that knowledge with all my friends.

If you knew then what you know now, what would you do differently in opening your shop?

I’m still working on that one. I do know a lot more now than I did, but I feel like I still have a lot more growing to do.

Meet Colleen Weikel of Lancaster, PA.  You find lots of fun jewelry in her Etsy shop whatsingramasdrawers but first read more about her here on Promo Junkies of Etsy:

How did you get started on Etsy?

I got started on Etsy when I retired from work. I had done craft shows for many years and wanted to open an Etsy shop in order to slow down my craft show schedule. Turns out we opened 2 Etsy shops.

What is your inspiration for your shop?

Color and nature inspire me. I try to use my love of color and design in my jewelry. Every bead is in some way connected to nature as is color.

What is your favorite item from your own shop and why?

My favorite piece right now, and this changes often, is my crocheted choker necklace. I think i love it because I love to crochet and I love the look of beads with the thread.

How do you unwind when you’re not creating?

When I’m not creating I read and I write. For me reading is a vacation from everything. And writing is fun because I can use my imagination in different ways. My writing tends to be funny, so I have a great time with it.

List 3 of your favorite Etsy shops.

Three of my favorite Etsy shops are: Sassy Belle Wares – I love her bracelets. Stamp Blanks – a great shop for anyone who wants to make personalized jewelry. And Black Magic Studio – I love vintage things.

How would you describe your work style?

I guess my work style is eclectic. I like so many different styles that I have to try everything I see. That’s why I have so many beads.

If you could choose any one superhero power, what would it be and why?

I never thought about a super power, but if I had to choose, I would have to say I’d like to be able to fly. Cars and traffic drive me crazy and I don’t like long rides, so flying would be perfect.

If you knew then what you know now, what would you do differently in opening your shop?

If I knew how bad my old camera was I would have bought a new camera before I took almost 400 pictures because I had to take them all again. The new camera is a huge improvement.

From Omaha, NE, Jenny R sells her vintage and handmade jewelry in her Etsy shop BlackMagicStudio.  Read more about her here on Promo Junkies of Etsy:

How did you first get started on Etsy?

I first learned about Etsy from a girl in a silversmithing class I was taking. My boyfriend’s sister-in-law has a shop, so she taught me all the ins and outs so I could start selling my handmade jewelry. I was very excited to find out I could sell vintage too!

What is your inspiration for your shop?

The inspiration for my shop is the idea of making life just a little more beautiful.

What is your favorite item from your own shop and why?

I have two shops, and it would be very hard to pick a favorite. And truthfully, if I really could I would probably keep it for myself. I am particularly fond of this one though

necklace

How do you unwind when you’re not creating?

When I’m not creating (or doing homework), I can be found crocheting (more creating), camping, kayaking, hiking, surfing the internet, or snuggling kitties.

List 3 of your favorite Etsy shops.

Three of my very favorite Etsy shops are aKNITomywww.etsy.com/shop/aKNITomy, zavesfeltwww.etsy.com/shop/zavesfelt, and AddSome Stitcheswww.etsy.com/shop/AddSomeStitches.

How would you describe your work style?

My work style regarding Etsy is basically I do what I can when I have time. I’m also a college student, usually employed part-time, and always involved in community service.

If you could choose any one superhero power, what would it be and why?

Hmm… one superhero power… I would have to go with telekinesis. It would seriously freak people out if I could move things with my mind, plus I’m kind of lazy. I think it would make cleaning the house a LOT easier.

If you knew then what you know now, what would you do differently in opening your shop?

I wouldn’t do anything differently in opening my shop. Making mistakes and learning things slowly are valuable parts of the process.
